Call for Papers

In 1994, the Ferdinand-Pfohl-Society, founded a year earlier, was renamed the Pfohl-Woyrsch-Society. The Hamburg-based society is taking the “double anniversary” of its founding and renaming as an opportunity to organise a two-day symposium on the Hamburg music critic and composer Ferdinand Pfohl (1862-1949) and the Altona composer, organist and choirmaster Felix Woyrsch (1860-1944) in Hamburg's KomponistenQuartier.

Musicologists and researchers from related disciplines (e.g. media studies) from Germany and abroad are invited to analyse the life and work of the musicians. The Pfohl-Woyrsch-Society and its archives are happy to support research projects by providing source material. In view of the many years of activity of both musicians and the sporadic state of research to date, the subject area is largely open. Possible aspects are not exhaustive:

  • Sources
  • Style / compositional aesthetics
  • Questions and references of genre history
  • Interaction with institutions (P: Hamburger Nachrichten, Bayreuth; W: churches, municipal concerts)
  • History of reception

Abstracts (300-400 words) are requested to be submitted by 30 April 2024 (extended deadline!) to Dr Simon Kannenberg (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).
